Acknowledging that the path to a sustainable future is a marathon, not a sprint, Jardan and Koichi Takada Architects joined for the first in a series of conversations around sustainability.

Believing that a unified approach within the design and architecture industry will be key to advancing sustainability efforts, the sustainability conversations series is conceived as a space to explore ideas, highlight innovation and motivate change. Koichi Takada and Nick Garnham of Jardan reflected on the importance of designers and architects sharing knowledge and how a more sustainable industry can be realised by working together. Their discussion focused on the opportunities and challenges in designing a more resilient and sustainable world for future generations.

Action on climate change and the reduction of carbon emissions is a mission Jardan has been taking seriously since being certified carbon neutral in 2014. Emphasising local design and manufacturing and sustainable sourcing of materials, Jardan has also focused on building a circular business model and optimising the brand’s transportation practices. A similar focus on the big picture drives Koichi Takada Architects. Addressing the concerning impact of his industry on carbon emissions (buildings are responsible for approximately 40% of greenhouse gas emissions), Koichi sees incredible opportunity to reverse environmental damage at the design stage through a holistic vision for new projects. The practice works to restore the balance between nature and the built environment.

Gathering in Jardan’s Paddington showroom, guests were invited to engage in the discussion between Koichi and Nick as they shared their triumphs as well as the frustrations they come up against in operating carbon-neutral businesses. Given the scope and complexity of the topic, this was only the beginning of many conversations, with this first event laying a foundation for sharing knowledge and exchanging ideas.
