Wood never goes out of fashion – but it does have a shelf life. While the warmth and texture of timber has seen it remain popular in architectural applications for centuries, it can be difficult and time-consuming to maintain that initial glow. Enter Knotwood.

Knotwood has come up with a solution for architects and homeowners looking for materials with increased longevity and low maintenance properties, while still achieving the beauty of natural wood. Made from aluminium sublimated with an ever-growing array of timber finishes, Knotwood is a wood alternative with a wide range of applications. Australian owned and operated, the company prides itself on maintaining large scale manufacturing capabilities with a community focused mindset, working alongside local architects and project managers to create solutions that work for their buildings.

Knotwood designs and manufactures modular aluminium profiles in a range of shapes and sizes. With an eye on current trends, the company’s range is always evolving. Currently, 40 different wood grain colours are offered as well as an ever-changing array of profiles that can be customised with angling, spacing and installation methods to suit a specific project. Designed for facades and cladding, especially on multi-storey buildings, the products can also be used for soffits, fences, screens, shutters, pergolas, decking and more.

Built by Graya, this beautiful apartment building uses Knotwood battens on the soffits of each of the five levels.

Unlike timber products that require annual washing, sanding and recoating, aluminium will not warp or discolour and requires only minimal maintenance. It is also lightweight, non combustible, weather resistant and insect proof. Of particular benefit for architects and building owners, its noncombustible features will help a project achieve BAL FZ and Group 1 fire ratings. Knotwood products are made in Australia using a sustainable method of production that minimises and recycles all waste within its systems. Only VOC free powders and films are used in the finishes – and, like all aluminium, the product is 100 per cent recyclable.

Specified by leading architect Joe Adsett for the high-end Maison residences in New Farm, Brisbane, Knotwood creates a beautifully crafted aesthetic while also achieving a Group 1 fire rating, critical for multi-residential buildings such as this one. For a wood look without the need for sanding, staining or recoating, Knotwood provides an innovative solution that lasts.
