Reflection of Context – Lake View House by Arent&Pyke
Focused on creating a sense of place centred around internal and external living, Arent&Pyke extends the experience of Lake View House beyond its walls. The interior designer ensures an appropriate sense of scale and form sits on the landscape, whilst embedding modern comfort and a feeling of ease within the rural weekender.
Lake View House fits seamlessly within its rural surrounds, taking cues from the environment when being recrafted into its contemporary form. Casting a familiar, high-pitched gable rooftop, the generous family home matches the surrounding setting. Planned to be an infrequently visited weekender, this needed to be considered in the approach. Integrating a resilience and solidity in the materials used, as well as the ability to close the residence on departure, was key to its longevity. Arent&Pyke adds layers of personality, bringing a rich palette and texture through patterns and a balance of animation and control.
Using a muted palette for the base with white elements emphasises the vast nature of the interior. The home focuses on creating visual access between inside and out as it looks over the abundant grounds. Bringing a connection into the house, the encasing form then draws focus to the changing surrounds as a reflection of the seasons, with the use of large and equally generous glazing revitalising the experience of the home. Wanting to create a space that allowed for personalisation, wallpaper, patterns and textures capture a certain whimsy, with more contemporary gestures and artwork adding a touch of freshness.
Bringing elements of the outside in, various green tones such as pistachio reflect the established forest and soften the overall palette. The connection to the lake and access beyond the threshold remained an integral part of the home’s story and visual access between the indoors and outdoors is a major part of that. At the centre of the residence sits the kitchen, which embodies calmness and restoration that then flows into other more active and passive areas of the residence. The underlying sense of retreat is emphasised throughout in various ways, using the surrounding landscape as key motivation for the approach.
