Revitalising the Front Boundary – Langford Gates
An entry gate’s primary function is to filter the flow of traffic into a property, but a thoughtful design also acts as a discreet invitation, encouraging the gaze to linger and the mind to speculate about what lies beyond.
Auckland-based Langford Gates specialises in gates of this nature, integrating the structure with surrounding landscaping to establish a front boundary of distinction. Langford Gates Director Josh Langford approaches each project with curiosity, eking out a bespoke functional solution to underpin a memorable first impression. “We have never said, ‘No, that’s not possible’,” Josh says. “I like the challenge of looking at the client’s aesthetic brief and then figuring out how to make it work. Our designs are highly custom solutions, and we have a large portfolio of gate designs that can solve almost any issue.”
Langford Gates typically employs a combination of powder-coated aluminium, steel and timber to promote longevity and best address the requirements of each project.
At the Langford Gates Martin Avenue project, the incline of the site necessitated an innovative technique to accommodate a set of inward-swinging gates. To maintain a minimal clearance at the bottom, the gates were fitted with custom brackets housing a self-lifting mechanism that supports each side as it swings open, gently tilting the gate up and allowing it to mirror the incline of the driveway with-out scraping its surface. “There was also some uncertainty about how to join the left-hand side of the gate to the existing hedge,” Josh continues. “The gap was resolved by attaching fine stainless-steel cables to ensure the perimeter is completely secure. It gives the illusion of being open, but the cables actually enclose it.”
Exhibiting a dexterity with materials, Langford Gates typically employs a combination of powder-coated aluminium, steel and timber to promote longevity and best address the requirements of each project. This holistic mindset also extends to the provision of other services, as the complementary skillset of the team means it is equipped to facilitate electricals and landscaping when required to shepherd a project to fruition.
In Josh’s view, this integrated methodology allows a superior solution to surface. “The entrance gate is extremely important,” he notes. “It’s the first thing your guests see as they arrive and the last thing they notice as they leave.” With its classic linearity belying a cutting-edge mechanical solution, Martin Avenue offers an eloquent example of Langford Gates’s analytical approach to the front boundary.
