Lindfield Spanish Mission by Studio-T
Celebrating functional luxury, Lindfield Spanish Mission accommodates both the practical and aesthetic needs of a growing family. Crafted by interiors firm Studio-T, in collaboration with architect Jonathon West and designer Janice Yim, the home prioritises longevity and champions timeless furniture.
Aptly named, Lindfield Spanish Mission captures the architectural heritage of the Sydney suburb of Lindfield. The distinguished building, featuring an arcade and gable walls, revives elements of the late 18th- and early 19th-century Spanish missions in California. Studio-T embraces the existing foundation throughout its renovation work, ensuring that the completed interiors are imbued with the same sense of sophistication. The design brief centred on tailoring the home to modern family life, which includes increasing access to natural light as well as forming appropriate divisions between private and communal spaces.
While the original facade, panelled doors, ornate ceilings and front rooms are retained, thoughtful insertions enable existing spaces to be reimagined. The home is uplifted by fresh details such as new French doors and a glass pocket door that separates the children’s bedrooms from the living areas. Harmonising with the original architecture, the resulting addition has its own identity and is affectionately dubbed the ‘Get Smart chamber’ as a playful reference to the 1960s American parody.
Throughout Lindfield Spanish Mission, practical requirements are approached with tact, such that the idea of utilities is presented secondary to joyful experiences. In the powder room, a skylight is discreetly tucked behind a curved plaster ceiling – as natural light enters the space, enhancing the rich tone of Japanese tiles, the room emerges in striking contrast to the bright and airy interiors that define the residence. Sliding doors leave a generous amount of circulation space for family members, providing a sleek solution to a busy home environment.
Alongside American architectural nods, international designs contribute to the refined character of the Sydney dwelling. In addition to a vintage desk chair from Denmark, an Italian Maralunga sofa speaks to an appreciation of high-quality, robust furniture. Textured Roman blinds soften the natural light entering the front bedrooms, while Japanese blinds allow gentle illumination of the hallway and rear living space. Echoing Japanese joinery, the hallway unit serves as a practical centrepiece, functioning as a linen cupboard, school bag-packing zone and drawer system for household items. The designs showcased complement one another – each with the capacity to stand the test of time.
Utilising elevated works that are inherently practical, Studio-T draws focus to the luxury found in architecture, finishes and everyday objects. As it emphasises the aesthetic aspect of residential living, Lindfield Spanish Mission presents familiar routines in new and exciting ways.
