Cohesive Calm – Lindisfarne House by Preston Lane Architects
Lindisfarne House strikes a bold statement, referencing a traditional silhouette cloaked in a darkened metal sheet exterior. Preston Lane Architects navigates the irregular site arrangement to fit the lifestyles of its inhabitants and how they wish to engage with the streetscape.
Located within an internal allotment, Lindisfarne House embraces the opportunity to create its own arrival experience. Through landscaping and a play on concealment, the form reveals itself in a unique sense. Whilst the exterior feels cohesive in its consistent wrapping of sheet metal, the interior is an open and light-filled series of spaces that offers places of retreat and connection. Preston Lane Architects ensures the interior acts as a counter to the more imposing exterior, where openings connect outward and above, creating a cohesive feeling of calm.
Lindisfarne House is a private home that provides a reprieve from the outside world. The structure is arranged in an ‘H’ formation, creating unique interior courtyard spaces and, by default, increasing the overall perimeter and opportunity for glazing and openings. The two courtyards sit on either end of the living space, allowing for cross ventilation and for the internal areas to spill out into the landscape. There is a simplicity used throughout that references the idea of slowing down, where doors easily block connection to the outdoors and an expression of self is reflected within the interior.
Comprised of white masonry brickwork and Colourbond cladding, the exterior reflects the internal materiality and atmosphere. As a family home, a level of functionality and flexibility is integrated into the planning and select materiality. Robust materials sit alongside more textural timber and soft textiles, allowing the rituals of everyday to occur unencumbered by the environment.
