Inward Sanctuary – Luna by Templeton Architecture
Luna is the transformation of an existing corner store in South Melbourne into a calm residential sanctuary. Templeton Architecture strikes the ideal balance between a respectful restoration and retaining the past, reflecting the owners’ desire to live openly and connectedly within a modern context.
Encased within thick masonry walls, Luna comes together as an unexpected haven in its South Melbourne setting. With other similar Victorian-era buildings dotting the streets and retaining the character and charm of the area, the facade is left mainly untouched. Formerly a corner store and located at the junction of two streets, the structure provided the ideal canvas for Templeton Architecture.
Taking influence from the client who wanted to create a space that would celebrate both old and new details, the approach caters to an open and connected floor plan while also being flexible to change. The new interventions on the site retain the appearance of the existing building, however, the project itself reflects a larger ideology about the changing urban landscape. Though the home is constructed from robust materials, there is a lightness and softness. The integration of steel and glass windows and doors brings in natural light and air, providing a feeling of calm that flows through the interior and into the courtyard.
The protective outdoor space provides privacy on all sides while remaining open to the elements above. Being able to allow the building to breathe was integral to the brief, as was instilling refinement and beauty. By opening the interior and replanning for flexibility, the multi-level home is both suited to its occupation today and is able to be altered as needed in the coming years.
A deep connection with nature underpins Luna, and the creation of a private and cocooning outdoor area encourages movement between inside and out. In blurring the lines between old and new, Templeton Architecture ensures the foundations are set for the future.
