The design concept underpinning Maggie Street incorporates elements from both the neighbouring residential and industrial styles. Curious Practice proposes new, denser living spaces, each with its own unique character, while native landscaping enriches the site with integrated biodiversity.

Embodying past and present influences, Maggie Street pays homage to the diverse functions and architectural styles of its surroundings. Located on the outskirts of Newcastle, this cluster of townhouses embodies high-density living while allowing room for individual expression. Designed to accommodate a range of residents, from remote workers to young families, the design prioritises a sense of community and connectivity. Through a gentle integration of the residences on site, Curious Practice and MUD Landscape Design emphasise their shared commitment to environmental restoration post-construction.

Consisting of four townhouses, each spanning two levels, this housing arrangement offers improved affordability within the established neighbourhood, which is strategically located for convenient access to transportation and key amenities. Designed with sustainability in mind, the homes are equipped with electrical appliances, solar panels and rainwater storage systems. To ensure the long-term durability of each home, as well as the reduction of waste, robust materials have been carefully selected so the dwellings can withstand the passage of time.

The flexible planning across both levels allows for customisation in order to suit each owner’s needs. The ground level includes one dedicated car space for each townhouse, with another that could be used for additional parking or alternative uses. Inside the dwelling, integrated custom-made joinery imbues the spaces with warmth while celebrating the beautiful craftsmanship. Externally, a banded approach helps to reduce the perceived scale of the structure on site, balancing with the overall volumes and roof profiles of neighbouring residential and industrial buildings.

Maggie Street embodies a thoughtful approach to contemporary living. Addressing the need for additional housing in an established area, Curious Practice crafts a series of townhouses that respond to context through an observation of the surroundings.
