A beautiful response to the quiet island it inhabits in Maine, this coastal home by Gachot offers a momentary respite from city life, seamlessly balancing relaxation with sophistication against a backdrop of ocean views.

Maine Waterfront Home is the holiday house for a couple living on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. “The goal was to create somewhere perfect for casual entertaining surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Maine. They wanted a home that felt inviting and flexible, able to host both large gatherings and cosy weekends,” says John Gachot, who is the co-founder of Gachot alongside his partner Christine. As avid art collectors, the clients wanted to live in a creative, vibrant space that was more casual than their New York City home but felt just as luxurious.

Its layout and open spaces enhance the connection to the landscape, making the natural beauty and breathtaking views a key part of everyday living.

Nestled on a small, peaceful island near Portland, Maine Waterfront Home is bordered by a nature preserve and boasts stunning views toward Casco Bay. “The home is designed to follow the waterline and capture the beautiful western sunsets,” says John. “Its layout and open spaces enhance the connection to the landscape, making the natural beauty and breathtaking views a key part of everyday living.” Naturally, orienting the rooms to take advantage of the views was also a key consideration.

While much of the original facade’s detailing is retained, the interior layout has been reconfigured not only to capture light and views but to prioritise entertaining. The main hub – the dining, living and kitchen zone – is laid out in a unique way, focusing on segmented rooms and features to create distinct areas for gathering. Other additions include a games room and an guestroom to accommodate the couple’s friends who have travelled from the city.

The interiors feature vibrant colours and contrast, and materiality favours natural textures while furnishings are bold and whimsical.

These contrasting elements help distinguish each room from one another and enhance the home’s inviting atmosphere. Meanwhile, furnishings are thoughtfully placed to highlight waterfront views and encourage connection with nature, “combining vintage, custom and contemporary pieces to create a refined yet comfortable vibe,” notes John. Naturally, artworks are seamlessly integrated into the design and reflect the clients’ love of art.

Balancing contemporary design in a rural setting, Maine Waterfront Home provides the ultimate retreat from the busyness of life in Manhattan. John reflects; “as you walk through the home, you can’t help but feel a sense of warmth and comfort.”
