Inward Focus – Malvern Residence by Preston Lane Architects
Balancing both new and existing elements, Malvern Residence introduces a living pavilion housed within an additional linear form. Preston Lane Architects combines a nature-inspired and warm series of gestures that bind the various eras and create a connected family home.
In expanding the family home, moments for privacy were integrated as well as modern amenities and an increased overall footprint. After removing the alterations of previous iterations, the core form was restored and a clearer idea of the potential of the site could be realised. Whilst the original floor plan remained and was reallocated based on the best functional use, a new open and connected living area is added to the rear, stretching the form outward. Preston Lane Architects creates a counter to the nature of the original home in proposing the new elements.
Needing to avoid onlooking issues from the adjacent apartment block, the addition is reactive and backs the new kitchen and dining room into the rear of the site. This arrangement allows for the living area to open with ease to the new landscape by Amanda Oliver Gardens and emphasises the home as a place of retreat. A play on split levelling allows for a dynamic inner experience. Sunken elements such as the lounge area indicate a shift in function without the need for a walled distinction and encourage free movement throughout.
An open engagement with the natural elements was integral to how the new home would function. A palette inspired by an outward focus is complemented by timber, which adds a warmth and texture. Together with these hues, a muted base allows for a versatile interior approach, with only décor and furnishings providing saturated colour. Light elements are added to provide animation without altering the character of the original home or the relationship to the garden.
