Jamie Bush + Co and Walker Workshop takes cues from the natural world in crafting Mandeville Residence, a home resolutely informed by context. Connecting to the surrounding landscape using Eco Outdoor Scala Travertine, the Californian home opens to the environment, its interior and exterior spaces united by the creamy warmth of travertine underfoot spanning the lodging’s impressive scale.

Embracing the ambience of its natural setting, Mandeville Residence proposes a generous open-air sanctuary. Composed of contemporary linear volumes that sweep across grassy grounds, the home’s designers preserve a sense of eternal timelessness with gestures such as a familiar gabled roof and an immutable material palette. Elegantly realised using relaxed organic elements, the arrangement of white oak, western red cedar, terracotta and travertine imbues a comforting warmth that echoes the balmy climate of Los Angeles.

Blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor has been aptly affected by the application of Eco Outdoor Scala Travertine, creating a single uninterrupted surface throughout the entire residence.

Stretching across its four-acre estate, the home’s floor plan heartily bares itself to the outside world – its interior spaces enjoy vast views through glazing, while doors open to seamlessly extend living spaces across 325 square metres of covered patio. Blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor has been aptly affected by interior designers Jamie Bush + Co’s application of Eco Outdoor Scala Travertine, creating a single uninterrupted surface throughout the entire residence. Traversing the ground floor, travertine is distributed from the landing of the home’s grand curved staircase to wrapping the outdoor swimming pool and meeting the soft landscape with soothing ease.

Deriving its materiality from the earth, Mandeville Residence exists as a refined yet rustic presence. Travertine is a natural limestone that arises from steaming hot springs and geological caves, and the resulting stone slabs are lightly touched and simply sawn by Eco Outdoor to retain their terrene character. Shaded with a distinct milky hint of alabaster and imparted with inimitable texture by centuries of mineral deposits, Eco Outdoor’s Scala Travertine presents a palpable slice of the outside world to the home – exhibiting nature’s imperfect tactility that both the company and the home’s designers strive to celebrate.

Shaded with a distinct milky hint of alabaster and imparted with inimitable texture by centuries of mineral deposits, Eco Outdoor’s Scala Travertine presents a palpable slice of the outside world to the home – perfectly exhibiting nature’s imperfect tactility that both the company and the home’s designers strive to celebrate.

Employed famously in the Colosseum, travertine has cemented its place as a refined yet robust material. Eco Outdoor’s premium Scala range typifies the resounding beauty and everlasting durability inherent to natural travertine and has been utilised to great effect amongst Mandeville Residence’s tranquil aesthetic. Richly aged, the faintly ridged and grooved flooring surface is a calming cornerstone of the dwelling’s design. While the home’s stately composition undoubtedly declares itself as a contemporary form, the ample inclusion of enduring materials illustrates a reverence for tradition and new history to be written.
