A Californian bungalow with a distinctly Australian edge, Maribyrnong House by Melbourne-based Studio Ceravolo is defined by its intentional simplicity. The house embodies a considered design approach, becoming a home tailored to the needs of the family who inhabits it.

Limitation often sparks creativity. Faced with a brief that prioritised generous space for both a workspace and garage, Studio Ceravolo moved away from conventional expectations of this housing typology. Instead, the architect makes the most of the existing conditions to craft a home attuned to the specific needs and daily rhythms of the occupants. The result is a thoughtful take on the California bungalow, centred around an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area forming the heart of the home. Anchored by a freestanding wood fireplace, the space radiates the warmth of family life.

Most striking is the central staircase – a burnished rust feature that lends subtle grandeur to the space.

The residence’s colour palette is deliberately restrained, allowing for moments of brightness and contrast. From the muted greens of the bathroom tiles to the natural glow of the timber dining table, colour is employed purposefully, drawing the eye to select details. Most striking is the central staircase – a burnished rust feature that lends subtle grandeur to the space. Typically a dominant element in open-plan interiors, here the stair subverts expectation. Flanked by solid walls and tucked discreetly between two exterior access points, it feels almost hidden – a secret threshold leading to the rest of the home. In this way, it becomes an invitation to explore and engage with the dwelling’s more private layers.

Maribyrnong House is a warm family home – one that allows life’s simple pleasures to unfold.

The exterior continues the dialogue established within. Solid structural forms anchor the design, imparting a sense of permanence, while the overlooking mezzanine, when viewed from outside, lends an expansiveness that belies the home’s modest footprint – another clever bit of spatial design. The restraint shown inside continues outside, too, where a careful material palette playfully nods to the home’s varied influences without cluttering the composition. The result is a calm, collected presence that encourages its occupants to slow down and rest.

At its core, creativity is problem solving, and here the outcome speaks for itself. Maribyrnong House is a warm family home – one that allows life’s simple pleasures to unfold. A quiet Saturday afternoon by the glow of the fire, dinner slowly simmering in the open kitchen, the passage of time marked only by the shifting choreography of light and shadow: every element is crafted not only for living, but for experiencing.
