Restrained Addition – Medindie House by Architects Ink
Medindie House sits immersed within the landscape, maintaining the integrity of its original sandstone and architectural identity. Architects Ink incorporates a balance of robust and light elements with a modernist and controlled approach to elevate and rejuvenate the residence.
Nestled among an assortment of established heritage and stately homes, Medindie House invites contemporary touches whilst retaining original details. In proposing an addition to the established heritage home, the redesign sees the façade unchanged with the added extension to the rear – marking the move from a single storey home to multi-level dwelling. Architects Ink carefully manages the insertion, ensuring the existing fabric of the streetscape remains undisturbed.
To the rear of the home, a double storey form emerges, seeing open and free-flowing spaces blend into one as a reflection of the contemporary condition. Wanting to optimise the envied north-facing aspect of the rear yard, the additional form features extensive floor-to-ceiling glass to capture solar gain. Wall panels then sit set back to allow for a natural overhang to be created, acting as a sustainable cooling method. The project allows for a gentle balance between the historical and modern aesthetics whilst ensuring an internal comfort.
A modern sense of space and grandeur contrasts the existing design of the home, elevating the residence to its new dynamic iteration. Long and linear elements allow for vistas to be framed by large openings from all directions, increasing a sense of depth and liveable area. Formed and structurally supported by sturdy concrete, the glazing and other lighter elements become a counter to the otherwise imposing massing across the site. A cohesive materiality and considered linework aids movement through the home and ensures a sense of calm is exuded – creating a comfortable and relaxing home environment.
