Michigan Loft, once a car display and assembly factory in Chicago, has been repurposed into an industrial-style residence by Vladimir Radutny Architects. The redesign incorporates elements that offer both utility and amenity, elevating the space to a new level of refinement.

Nestled within the historic framework of a century-old automotive building, Michigan Loft stands as a testament to the transformative power of architecture. Originally serving a different purpose, the structure lacked the cosy ambiance typical of a home. Despite a prior rejuvenation, further refinement and considered detailing were required. Drawing from the lofty ceilings and abundant natural light streaming through expansive windows, Vladimir Radutny Architects expertly crafts moments of contrast and intimacy within.

Similarly, the rawness of the exposed structural elements contrasts the newly integrated pieces of joinery that are characterised by a crisp, linear geometry. The interplay between old and new, rough and sleek, becomes evident immediately upon entry and is consistently maintained throughout the home. The inclusion of a bespoke kitchen also underscores the residential nature of the space, complemented by thoughtfully selected furniture arrangements. A sunken lounge area too signifies a functional shift without necessitating a dividing wall or partition. Furthermore, various design elements throughout ensure uninterrupted visual connections between spaces and the surrounding environment.

In crafting a more intimate residential setting, lighting and texture play pivotal roles, directing attention to specific areas within the space and mitigating any sense of overwhelming vastness. Throughout the renovation, the architect endeavoured to create a retreat-like atmosphere, characterised by a delicate balance of restraint and openness. The flexible layout fosters opportunities for reuse as needed, with key support areas and storage all grouped together. Echoing the warmth of the original red brick, timber features prominently throughout, pared back with white and black accents, while vibrant pieces and sculptural furniture add points of interest in the residence.

The blend of past and present is thoughtfully considered and celebrated in Michigan Loft, resulting in a distinctive home. Through the integration of contemporary elements alongside existing features, Vladimir Radutny Architects encourages a harmonious balance and a commitment to preservation.
