Sweeping Softness – Modern Thai House by CLO Studios and Chris Clout Design
Aligned with the water’s edge, Modern Thai House draws from the ebb and flow of the ocean to come together as a series of sweeping curves and a softly considered palette. CLO Studios and Chris Clout Design combine to propose an elevated and refined contemporary residence that connects meaningfully to the natural elements.
With every element conceived from an organic inspiration, Modern Thai House aims to allow a flow of movement between inside and out, ensuring the natural surrounds remain a constant presence. As a response to place, the various zones within the home remain open and welcoming to natural ventilation and solar gains, while also being able to be compartmentalised as needed. A mostly earth-toned base palette is combined with timber to add warmth and dynamic textural quality. Soft hues define the overall feel of the interior through tactility, creating a home reminiscent of a boutique luxury hotel. With interior design by CLO Studios and building design by Chris Clout Design, the approach stems from an anchoring in place and ensures a calm series of spaces emerge.

Sited overlooking the water, a mostly linear plan ensures access to sweeping views are presented throughout the home and a series of integrated terraces encourage indoor-outdoor living. Wanting to bring elements of the surrounds into the interior experience of the home, an openness is expressed through layers of transparent screening and an increased flow of movement. Creating a sense of separation from the streetscape and neighbouring properties was also key – all views are directed toward the water.
Wanting to balance the daily functions of a home, open and shared spaces are combined with more intimate areas for retreat. The combination of contraction and release moments further reinforces the residence as a place of respite, allowing the various spaces within to become their own destinations. Warm tones of terracotta and apricot ensure a soft materiality base, with various furniture, lighting and artwork selected to sit within a similar tonality.
