Sympathetic and Discreet – Monterey by Insider Outsider
An expression of modesty and efficiency, Monterey is a welcomed addition to the surrounding landscape, sensitively inserted in place and founded on principles of simplicity. Insider Outsider approaches the home through a restrained and considered lens, responsibly engaging with the natural elements and aiming to leave little impact.
Optimising its removed location in Balnarring in Victoria, Monterey is an introspective home surrounded by a lush natural landscape. By focusing on the interior as a place of retreat and shelter, the natural elements remain a secondary and muted focus. Wanting to sit respectfully within the site, the resulting architecture is low-lying and linear – the exterior timber cladding allows the form to blend into the adjacent tree trunks. Acknowledging that being able to live so intimately within such a densely landscaped area is rare, the approach is one founded in a pared back restraint, seeing Insider Outsider look to the immediate surroundings for material and structural inspiration.
Soft in its overall silhouette and linear form, Monterey is a refined and well-articulated rural home. Despite its location and weathered timber materiality, every comprising element has been carefully considered with precision to ensure a comfortable and functional home is created. Visual connections both outward and between internal volumes ensure the residence feels open and immersed in its location with an intuitive ease of movement throughout.
Grouping areas together based on function, the front of the home sees the living spaces convene, whilst the sleeping and retreat spaces are to the rear. With the structure almost camouflaged in place, the garage is tucked into the overall form to feel like a natural extension. Able to be opened in various places to allow for natural ventilation, the exterior cladding functions to allow air inward and the internal open nature of the planning assists with airflow. By embedding a level of porosity to the building, the architecture exists as a living function of the landscape.
