Nomi Releases the Elegant Amelia Range
Taking the glamour and romance of 1930s and 1940s aviation as a touchpoint, Sydney-based furniture studio Nomi has created the sleekly elegant Amelia range.
In the world of aviation, no age was quite as grand as the 1930s and ’40s. It was an epoch when the first generation of modern, high-performance aircraft were taking to the skies – none as famed as the Lockheed Constellation, with its distinctive triple tail and curvaceous form. For Sydney furniture studio Nomi, the Constellation’s sleek, elegant lines were inspiration for a striking new range, Amelia (a name which also references history’s greatest female aviator).
“Amelia offers a sophisticated reinterpretation of the aircraft’s iconic features, from its sweeping curves to its pronounced lines,” says Nomi founder Henry Gresson. The range – which comprises an armchair, side chair, bar stool and cafe stool – embodies effortless simplicity. “Seeking to distil design elements to their most fundamental, our goal was to minimise complexity and reduce the number of components,” says Gresson. “The outcome is a refined collection that artfully balances proportion and materiality, exuding an inherent sculptural elegance.”
Like everything Nomi creates, Amelia is the considered result of dedicated craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail and superior materiality. And it comes at a decent price point, another of the brand’s drawcards. Additionally, the range is customisable, available in either polished stainless steel or Dulux powder-coated steel, with a range of upholstery options. These include Nomi’s signature Italian leathers or Maharam’s Meld fabric, which is comprised of 62 per cent post-consumer recycled polyester and is available in a wide colour range, from dark grey Panda to soft-toned Kiss.
The range is highly adaptable, suitable for both residential and commercial applications, equally at home in a bar or bistro as it would be in a contemporary dining room. It’s also a signifier of the brand’s desire to be constantly evolving and embracing new forms and modalities. “Amelia signifies our design direction,” Gresson says. “We’re enthusiastic about unveiling new finishes and materials as our collection expands.”
Established in 2013, Nomi is named for the Japanese word for chisel, which reflects its ethos: to honour both craftsmanship and the honesty of materials. “In Japanese woodworking tradition, the chisel is considered to be one of the purest tools and it represents both the woodworker and their craft.” The studio’s masterful blend of simplicity, elegance and precision is a fitting homage to those century-old traditions.
