Understated Luxury – Northbridge Residence by SJS Interior Design

Celebrating the connection to its Middle Harbour location, Northbridge Residence by SJS Interior Design highlights the essential qualities of family living, balanced with an appreciation for understated luxury.

A considered collaboration that saw SJS Interior Design work alongside architects Michael Robilliard and Associates, builders The Construction Connection and joiners Debrich, this ambitious project saw form play a critical role in informing spatial design. By emphasising the junction of clean lines against organic curves, the home in many ways mirrors the harbour tide, enhancing the experience of fluidity and movement within the space.

The intricate architectural ceiling across the ground floor speaks to the attention to detail in the project, whilst the organic curves compliment the tide of the harbour.

The home is spread over three levels, with each enjoying incredible views of the harbour courtesy of large windows and doors adorning the east-facing side of the building. The lower level houses the children’s bedrooms and games room, while upstairs, the master suite sits alongside a guest room and cinema, allowing for a delineation of private spaces between parents and children. Between the master suite above and the children’s rooms below, the entry and main communal spaces are set on the ground floor. Throughout this shared kitchen, living and dining space, intricate architectural ceiling detail draws the eye upward and eventually out to the views on offer.

Inspired by the natural beauty of Northbridge Residence’s location, the goal of the interior design was to curate an environment that emphasised calm, escapism, and most importantly, a connection to the physical landscape. Given the influence of the architectural ceiling in the main family living space, SJS approached the project in a more nuanced light, focusing on texture and layered materiality. Key materials used to achieve this result include a leathered cosmic black granite, calacatta viola, polished marmorino, grey washed timber flooring, deliberately aged brass and textured grasscloth. The results speak to an understated elegance that seeks not to compete with the waterfront views, but instead complements them as framed from inside.

A small but significant collection of furniture and artwork inspired the pops of aubergine that create an unexpected colour story throughout the project.

At the behest of the client, a small but sentimentally significant collection of furniture and artworks were incorporated into the interior design framework. These allowed for a trace of spontaneous whimsy in the design, with hints of aubergine unexpectedly popping up in different spaces, creating a surprising colour story and offsetting the darker and neutral tones which are otherwise so prominent. In addition to working within the interior setting, the bold colours also provide an impressive contrast to the harbour beyond.

Complementing the architecture and responding to the home’s location, the interiors are by turns bold and subtle, opulent and restrained. SJS Interior Design has crafted atmospherically rich spaces for luxurious family living.
