Matching hospitable service with a luxurious setting, ODE Dermatology forms a contemporary wellness destination. Designed by Foolscap Studio, the hotel-inspired clinic encourages guests to embrace a relaxing, multisensory experience.
Occupying a premium spot on Melbourne’s trendy Gertrude Street, ODE Dermatology proudly utilises its heritage foundation. The design brief called for engaged, sophisticated insertions into the historic building to balance the distinguished architecture with modern-day comfort and innovative technology. With an enhanced textural aspect, the project rejects the typically sterile aesthetic associated with skincare.
As a design strategy, Foolscap Studio follows the concepts of ‘inside-out’ and ‘duality as a unity’. With ‘inside-out’, the idea of inner beauty is emphasised using translucent and transformative materials that subtly reference the human body. In contrast, ‘duality as a unity’ sees aesthetically engaging elements placed in sometimes surprising harmony with high-end gadgetry.
Retaining the double-brick shopfront and former residence, Foolscap Studio integrates soulful original detail into the design of ODE Dermatology. While essential facilities such as the staff room and nurse’s station are accommodated, the interior maintains a feeling of warmth with large medical equipment concealed by custom joinery.

Visually, the reception and retail space entice passers-by Opalescent surfaces glow under the beams of integrated lighting, countered by a lavish velvet curtain. The curtain softens the lefthand side of the interior, creating a pleated trail into the depths of the building. Above, a light well decorated with greenery increases the sense of space in the compact hallway.
As clients approach the decompression lounge – a space especially designed for the time between arrival and consultation – a landscape of soft, elegant furnishings unfolds within a compact footprint. Enclosed treatment rooms echo the luxurious notes of the preceding spaces, providing an elevated environment for state-of- the-art therapies to take place.
