Peaceful Endurance – Old Westbury by Monica Fried Design and Mojo Stumer
Sitting with a timeless yet contemporary sensibility, Old Westbury is a family home that combines functionality with modern refinement. Monica Fried Design and Mojo Stumer ensure the generous site feels activated and engages with the landscape from all corners whilst retaining privacy.
Needing to endure the wear and tear of family life, Old Westbury adopts a textural approach that is both robust and traditional. Throughout the expansive dwelling located in Long Island, Monica Fried Design and Mojo Stumer integrate a concealed approach to amenity and storage with considered tactile finishes and iconic silhouettes. Capturing an expression of the owners and fulfilling their aspiration for a warm and inviting home environment, the architects integrate clean, linear gestures to ensure a peaceful stillness is felt within. Sitting in harmony with the surrounding landscape, the residence communicates a clear story of place, easily connecting to the natural elements that it is immersed within.
Setting the foundation for a collection of contemporary artworks and future decor, the home’s spaces are shaped by volume and light. Whilst the interior highlights such pieces, leaving room for interpretation and tranquillity was key to the overall approach. Neutral and natural tones are used throughout, with limestone flooring, oak panelling and specialised plaster becoming the three main finishes featured throughout. Textiles of varying backgrounds then add another layer of richness, bringing patterned details among the more restricted tones.
The main floor, which houses the entertaining and gathering spaces, allows clear movement between inside and out. On the level above are the passive areas, where five large bedrooms act as private retreats. By carefully allowing the spaces to sit comfortably beside one another, the overall home feels restorative and ensures a perpetual sense of calm.
