Osprey, Martha Cove by Wolveridge Architects and Figurehead Group
In the shadow of Mount Martha, where land meets sea, is Martha Cove, the region’s latest coastal destination. Exemplifying – and elevating – the town’s humble beachside aesthetic, Osprey, Martha Cove, designed by Wolveridge Architects for Figurehead Group, offers a new standard for coastal apartment living on Victoria’s picturesque and historic Mornington Peninsula.
The region’s architectural past has at times been defined by interventions, which have sought to compete with the peninsula’s immense natural beauty, failing to capture the true essence of coastal living. Cognisant of this, Figurehead Group sought to collaborate with a firm known for considered design, making Wolveridge Architects the natural choice. Jerry Wolveridge and the team worked tirelessly to create a “beach house in an apartment setting”, using open layouts, natural materials and a light colour palette – warm whites, soft greys and hints of eucalypt – that embodies the locale and reflects the landscape and views across to Arthurs Seat.
“Enjoying life on the coast always comes back to a few really simple principles and, for the most part, they are all linked with the idea of connecting ourselves back to nature,” explains Wolveridge. “Whether that’s a view, a place in the sun, the smell of salty air … these are all things that improve our quality of life, and they can all happen from the comforts of a well-considered beach home.”
Osprey’s measured design aesthetic is underpinned by Figurehead Group’s vision for delivering marina apartments that offer a low-maintenance alternative to the typical beach house. Equally appealing to downsizers and lifestyle seekers, Osprey was developed for those who value style, sustainability and a strong sense of community.
A true example of architectural innovation, featuring signature elements of the Wolveridge aesthetic, Osprey’s form is defined by a distinctive landscaped central courtyard. This open-air space is designed to foster community interaction while providing a tranquil retreat for residents. Eliminating dark hallways while enhancing crossflow ventilation, light well breezeways to each apartment create a sense of serene living while facilitating a strong connection to the coastal environment.
“We wanted to offer apartments in Martha Cove that utilised sophisticated design and construction practices to feel light, bright and use space better,” says Joe Grasso, founder and managing director of Figurehead Group and Osprey’s developer and builder. “Quality architecture shouldn’t be reserved for oversized homes only.”
Located in what is no longer one of the Mornington Peninsula’s best-kept secrets, Osprey, Martha Cove is the result of a deeply considered architectural collaboration between two parties determined to raise the standard of coastal living.
