Pearl Beach by Benson McCormack Architecture and Studio Joan layers rich textures, colour and natural materials to create a beautiful, inviting and effortlessly liveable home.

Studio Joan’s latest project, Pearl Beach, showcases the studio’s distinctive approach to coastal design, blending unexpected elements to create a home that is both visually striking and effortlessly liveable. This project reflects founder Tegan Klusenberg’s vision to move beyond the minimalist aesthetic often seen in beachside residences, embracing layers of texture and colour. In collaboration with Benson McCormack Architecture and builder Glen McFarlane, the project was driven by a shared ethos of creating spaces that are functional yet deeply inviting.

From the outset, Studio Joan sought to infuse the interiors with a rich, tactile palette and a touch of playfulness. “There was an almost ‘expected’ direction for the interiors,” Klusenberg recalls. “The client and I had discussions about the interiors being clean and minimal, but I just had this feeling that we should inject colour, texture and surprise into the home.” This philosophy guided the design, resulting in spaces that integrate materials such as tumbled stone tiles and luxurious linens, accented with beautiful pops of colour. Capanna marble from CDK Stone – used in the kitchen and chosen for its resemblance to sand and surrounding rock formations – became a cornerstone of the palette, grounding the design in its coastal setting.

The design also focused on maximising natural light, enhancing the rich textures and materials throughout the day. Natural elements like marble and limestone, paired with custom brass hardware by Studio Henry Wilson, seamlessly connect the kitchen, bathrooms and living spaces. Klusenberg’s attention to detail ensures that even the smallest elements work together to elevate the home’s character. “Whether it was the metal lighting from Anna Charlesworth or the Kelly Wearstler fabric on the bedhead, it was all about layering, which helps when it’s time for the clients to start living in their space. Nothing will ever feel out of place or like it doesn’t belong.”

Designed to accommodate both quiet family time and larger social events, the downstairs space seamlessly extends the interior outdoors.

Furniture and lighting choices add both comfort and character. The upstairs lounge room features a Jardan Thursday sofa paired with a Featherston Elastic Suspension Chair from grazia&co, creating a harmonious blend of warmth and statement design. In the dining area, Jardan’s Murphy dining table and chairs provide a versatile setup for family meals or larger gatherings.

Designed to accommodate both quiet family time and larger social events, the downstairs space seamlessly extends the interior outdoors. “The way we furnished that area feels cosy for family movie time, but we also included a super-special wet bar and dining area for when they open up the huge doors for an indoor-outdoor summer soirée.”

Collaboration with builder Glen McFarlane was key to bringing Klusenberg’s vision to life. “We respected what each other was doing,” the designer notes. “Neither of us was too proud to admit when something needed reworking. Glen also takes immense pride in the tradespeople he employs and respects their individual skills, which is very evident in this project.” This synergy fostered a smooth process where creative ideas could flourish.

Pearl Beach is a testament to Studio Joan’s commitment to creating spaces that feel like sanctuaries. Klusenberg focused on tailoring the design to suit the clients’ lifestyle, ensuring the home offers flexible spaces that shift seamlessly from intimate zones to entertaining hubs. By thoughtfully layering colour, texture and natural materials while embracing light and playfulness, Studio Joan has crafted a warm and inviting home that will gracefully evolve with the family.
