Frederick Tang Architecture’s renovation of two neighbouring Upper West Side apartments transforms them into a vibrant, cohesive home for a family of five.

Quarry Loft, a reimagined apartment created by merging two adjacent units, balances private and communal spaces. Inspired by the family’s Indian heritage, richly coloured stone and textured surfaces anchor the design, giving each area a distinct yet cohesive character. The result is a thoughtful transformation that caters to the family’s evolving needs, from work-from-home setups to spaces that foster togetherness.

“Every New Yorker’s fantasy is to tear down the wall and join the space next door,” says Frederick Tang, founder and principal of Frederick Tang Architecture. The clients envisioned a simple combination of the two apartments, but Tang saw the potential for a more creative approach. The kitchen, for example, wasn’t simply retained from one apartment; instead, it was relocated to sit adjacent to the living room, becoming central to the family’s daily flow.

The adjacent dining area, featuring a custom-designed table in quartzite platinum crystal stone, offers space for larger gatherings. Overhead, a Bolle chandelier with frosted glass globes provides a sense of lightness, tying the dining and living areas together. The living room continues the theme of fluidity, with custom slatted white oak millwork and a tailored sectional sofa that brings a sense of warmth to the modern design.

The library, located at the entrance, is both a functional and inviting space. With vaulted ceilings that echo the tambour motif seen throughout the apartment, it serves as an office, reading nook and guest room. Sliding panels conceal a home office setup, and a Murphy bed remains hidden within the custom cabinetry, allowing for seamless transitions between work, relaxation and hospitality.

Quarry Loft’s personal touches shine through in the children’s wing, where each child selected their own cubby cushions and wallpaper. These lively details imbue the space with a playful energy, while the adjacent bathroom features light, iridescent tiles to add a touch of whimsy.

At the opposite end, the adults’ zone reflects the family’s love of pattern and colour. The primary bedroom is a calming retreat in shades of blue and green, while the powder room showcases an ornate peacock wallpaper from De Gournay – a personal favourite of the clients.

By embracing the clients’ needs and blending them with thoughtful spatial solutions, Frederick Tang Architecture has created a home that is adaptable, welcoming and rich in material expression.
