When Theo Richardson, Charles Brill and Alexander Williams founded RBW in a basement in New York in 2007, they hoped to bring a shared knack for problem-solving into the world of lighting.

While technology and good design – with an eye to versatility and timelessness – inform the trio’s practice, at the nexus of RBW’s work is the understanding of light’s impact on everyday life and wellbeing. That ethos is infused in a product range that celebrates craft and materials and is marked by durability, lightheartedness and utility.

From its humble basement beginnings, RBW has become a global success story: its lighting has been installed across the world, from Copenhagen’s famed Noma restaurant to New York’s Sister Hotel. The brand recently relocated to a 900-square-metre factory in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York, where all of its products are designed and manufactured to meticulous standards.

Among RBW’s most popular lights are the Crisp, Dimple and Ripple sconces – available exclusively in Australia at Koda Lighting –which have appeared in countless design-led interior and exterior projects. These iconic, versatile wall sconces are a sophisticated take on a classic circular lighting trope, and while they cleverly embrace current directions in lighting, their form enables them to transcend trends and remain relevant.

Taking its name from the moulded grooves of its solid-glass shade – resembling the ruffles of a potato chip and bringing texture to an otherwise timeless design –the Crisp inserts personality into any space. Its inherent versatility allows for both wall and ceiling mounting, and the luminaire can elevate both interiors and exteriors with its nuanced form.

The compact and dimmable Dimple is covered with a solid domed diffuser, resulting in the emission of a soft, ambient light in a unique spheroid pattern. A solid-glass lens against an anodised aluminium backing instils a sense of retro style, while the Dimple’s LED light source is decidedly contemporary.

A successor to the Crisp and Dimple, the Ripple takes design cues from its forerunners with its artful ridges and eye-catching textures. The raised concentric rings embedded into its thick glass shade – recalling the gentle undulating waves on the surface of a body of water – give the Ripple its moniker. Inherently versatile, the piece is offered in an array of colours and finishes.

Each piece is available as a flush mount or a sconce in a range of glass finish options. Visit the Koda Lighting showroom to explore the complete RBW collection.
