Remsen Street by Augusta Hoffman Studio
Remsen Street by Augusta Hoffman Studio is a recently renovated apartment in Brooklyn Heights – a charming neighbourhood hugging the East River coveted for its brownstone-lined streets and relaxed urban-meets-residential feel.
The clients approached Hoffman to renovate and restore the 140-square-metre apartment and introduce an elevated and contemporary aesthetic that complemented their classic tastes. Though the space is relatively compact, the scope was extensive, and it encompassed structural works, restoration to original features such as intricate mouldings, relaying the floors and completely renovating the kitchen. The interior, which marries Hoffman’s inimitable oeuvre with the building’s heritage character, is a fitting abode for a young New York-based couple who call this stylish enclave home.
Hoffman conceived a new palette of greens, blues and creams, which feels fresh and contemporary but ultimately speaks to the building’s heritage. In the kitchen, there’s sage green cabinetry and marble countertops with grey and green veining, and the living and dining spaces are coated in soothing pearly hues. Elements like dark timber floors, jute rugs and linen pendants soften the overall aesthetic and add a certain gravitas.
The bedroom is a sanctuary enveloped in shades of blue. A hand-painted mural by James Mobley depicting a mountainous landscape enlivens the room, and a chair sits in the alcove created by the bay windows overlooking the treetops; it’s the perfect spot to sit with a book. An upholstered headboard in grey-blue tones and loose, natural timber furniture completes the calming space.
Inspired by the clients’ affinity for ornate French antiques, Hoffman has curated a collection of vintage and new furniture, lighting and objects. A pair of cream Art Deco-era armchairs with dark piping flank the fireplace in the living room alongside an ebonised Spanish coffee table, and in the dining room, a set of Joe Colombo dining chairs upholstered in a checkered Pierre Frey fabric surround a large dining table beside an antique cabinet.
At Remsen Street, contemporary tropes and fresh silhouettes commingle with decorative features and antiques, making for an interior that’s grand despite its size and mature without being stuffy. It’s a melange Hoffman has come to cultivate through her residential work, and Remsen Street is an elegantly realised example of this exacting approach.
