As an immersive and disconnected retreat, Residence H weaves intricate layers of select materiality to add richness and intrigue to the family home in Balmain. Nina Maya Interiors draws on the muted foundational base of the home to introduce elements that feel as though they have always existed in place.

As its own distinctive family home, Residence H connects to both its owners and to a sense of place through its unique storytelling. Nestled within the heritage rich surrounds of Sydney’s Balmain, the home draws on its storied and layered past to further add tiers of meaning and connection. In emphasising the idea of retreat, the underlying theme of the home is founded on escape and calm, and the ability to transport its residents to a whole other place once inside. Extending from the previous narrative of the home, the new is intertwined in amongst the old and given its own space. Nina Maya Interiors focuses on infusing personality and expression through the introduced elements, enlivening the home in the process.

Establishing its own design language, Residence H is built by On The Ball Building and is inspired by the owners’ most favoured holiday destinations. With limited ability to visit these places, their home became a place that needed to serve as more than just shelter – acting as a place to seek refuge and feeling like its own island. The curation of elements sees a variety of shapes that feel sculptural next to more balanced and linear forms. Colour is used sparingly to emphasise mood, creating hierarchy and moments of interest throughout.

Various textiles and textures are brought together with more balancing elements – like metal, timber and mirrored glass – to ensure they contrast one another and have the appropriate balance. With two young boys, the home needed to feel restorative and individual for its owners. Across its multiple levels, custom joinery has been imagined facilitating the needs of family life while also adding to the formal story of the home. The resulting structure feels refined through an attention to detail, emphasising craft and materiality that shapes each of the spaces.

While referencing a connection to history, Residence H plays out as its own modern and open contemporary family home. Nina Maya Interiors ensures a depth and richness results throughout in an inimitable point of difference from anything traditional.
