Perched atop an ancient lava field formed by the Santa Clara Volcano and framed by the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, the site of Roch House is defined by dramatic contrasts – black basalt flows, red sandstone formations and distant mountain ranges. Rather than competing with this epic setting, the home embraces it, settling into the terrain with ease while reflecting the grandeur of its surrounds through its design and build.

With full creative freedom, Design Studio JAC approached the project with gusto, creating a residence that perfectly expresses contemporary south-western design sensibilities. Bold, confident lines anchor the architecture, while generous glazing ensures the surrounding desert remains constantly visible. The house meets the immense scale of the landscape not through excess but through a balancing act – a dance between drama and restraint that allows the built form and environment to coexist with one another.

The desert landscape, which serves as the view, helps transform something as simple as an evening glass of wine into an extraordinary moment.

Designed as a retreat rather than a traditional family home, the house prioritises comfort and escape over the daily grind. Generous gathering spaces encourage connection, while quieter corners provide moments of solitude and reflection. Downstairs is where the luxury and comfort truly begin, however. A cinema room and a gym complement the outdoor setting, which includes a fireplace, outdoor kitchen and a pool and spa that wrap around the lava boulders. It’s from this vantage point that the desert landscape, which serves as the view, helps transform something as simple as an evening glass of wine into an extraordinary moment.

Approaching the residence also becomes something of an experience itself. A path cuts through the volcanic rock on site, creating a sense of drama from the beginning. Once inside, the true scale of the house unfolds gradually. Light filters through expansive windows, casting shifting shadows across the spaces throughout the day, while the openness of the living and dining areas reinforces a feeling of calm. Movement through the house feels measured and deliberate, echoing the slow rhythm of the surrounding landscape.

A home like this is intended for slowing down. The pressures of everyday life fall away in favour of long afternoons and uninterrupted views of the desert beyond.

The colour palette draws directly from the desert landscape beyond the walls; warm neutrals, soft earth tones and darker materials echo the shifting hues. Wide plank Belgian wood flooring grounds the interior, introducing an earthy quality that mirrors the terrain outside. Together, these materials create a palette that feels both natural and meditative, offering a gentle refuge from the stark beauty of the desert.

Throughout the home, moments of bold design appear, as well as sculptural elements and statement pieces that might command attention elsewhere. Here, however, they remain in dialogue with the landscape beyond the glass. Expansive yet calming. Dramatic yet grounded. A home like this is intended for slowing down. The pressures of everyday life fall away in favour of long afternoons and uninterrupted views of the desert beyond.
