A rejuvenation of an iconic restaurant in Sydney’s Lavender Bay, Sails’ second act is grounded in old-world charm and coastal luxury.

Led by Perry Drakopoulos of Sydney Restaurant Group alongside Larissa Orso Interiors, the renewed design is inspired by the hues and vestiges of the Mediterranean and the laid-back elegance of Southern France. The entire renovation was overseen in-house; Perry and his brother Daniel handpicking trades that perfectly aligned with their vision. “We selected those we knew could execute the delicate balance of old-world allure and modern sophistication, ensuring the integrity of our concept was brought to life,” says Drakopoulos.

Continuing through the main dining space, hues of green, white, French azure and dashes of crimson add vibrancy, while floor-to-ceiling windows welcome ample natural light into the space.

The space feels inherently connected to the locale, home to some of Sydney’s oldest buildings, with many similarly renovated to feel new yet still rooted in the past. Upon entry, a textural shell-like microcement finish on the walls is complemented by an intricate end-grain wood floor, imbuing warmth and tactility. Perhaps the greatest transformation is the reimagination of the private dining room into a cocooning, seaside oasis. The dining room’s new iteration is entirely drenched in pink hues. A pink dining hutch constructed by Taylor Made Joiners and tulip block print curtains are complemented by gingham draperies and banquettes. It feels simultaneously playful and bespoke; an unlikely yet perfectly executed combination.

Detailing and decor are considered, with rattan furniture adorned with nautical-striped cushions and playful fringes, statement armchairs and a floral mural on the ceiling by Rosy Sign Co. imbuing the space with a vintage, lived-in feel. In particular, lights found in antique shops across Paris and Italy by Secondi inject subtle elements of the past into the space, creating a soft, nostalgic glow.

Larissa Orso Interiors and Perry Drakopoulos created a renewed sense of place at this Sydney dining venue, balancing whimsical, laid-back charm with sophistication. The result is vibrant and fresh while honouring its legacy. Dining here is a transformative experience – it feels like enjoying a European summer with lazy sunny afternoons and time spent holidaying on the Greek islands.
