Sandringham Residence by Jost Architects blends period charm with contemporary design. This thoughtful integration activates the entire site while retaining the character and warmth of the Tudor-style home.

“Traditional Tudoresque homes tend to be quite dark internally,” says Patrick Jost, director of Jost Architects, and “to counter this, our approach focused on creating a new floor plan that opened to the rear of the house, flooding the interior with natural light and establishing strong visual connections to the landscaped gardens and courtyard.” After removing a series of mismatched rear additions that had been added over the years and lacked functionality, the aim was to create a contemporary extension that better suited the needs of the current owners. To honour the existing heritage, minimalist lines and a restrained material palette were used, allowing the original details to shine.

“We wanted to ensure that the interior felt cohesive and functional while still maintaining a connection to the home’s period details,” says Jost.

The addition of generous, moveable glass doors allows the living spaces to seamlessly connect with the landscaped areas. This integration was important for enhancing the site’s engagement, optimising the overall scale and providing improved access to natural elements, facilitating passive heating and solar gain throughout the day. “We used white brick to maintain a sense of continuity with the original masonry,” describes Jost, “while the new roofline echoes the existing pitched forms in a considered way.”

The design features subtle layers that connect the old and new. The interior approach emphasises careful detailing and durable finishes, using a timeless palette. Terrazzo flooring references the original materials on site while providing a striking contrast to the warmth and texture of the timber flooring. “We wanted to ensure that the interior felt cohesive and functional while still maintaining a connection to the home’s period details,” says Jost. Clean lines define the landscaped zones, with plantings softening the edges. Lush, low-maintenance native plants, along with succulents and other hardy species, frame the expansive lawn, creating a sense of continuity between the house and its surrounding environment. The internal courtyard, easily accessible from the main living and dining areas, serves as both a visual and functional centrepiece. Maintaining privacy while ensuring a familiar, intimate scale was a focus for both the interior and outdoor spaces.

To honour the existing heritage, minimalist lines and a restrained material palette were used, allowing the original details to shine.

In a considered exercise in balance, Sandringham Residence by Jost Architects demonstrates environmental sensitivity while honouring the home’s original heritage. By addressing the needs of modern family life and continuing the existing narrative, the design creates a future-focused dwelling.
