New Zealand beauty brand Sans [ceuticals] launches Perpetual, a world-first, waterless haircare innovation that balances sustainability with stunning design.

For New Zealand impresario Lucy Vincent, Sans [ceuticals] represents the culmination of a two-decade career in the hair and beauty industry. Vincent established the brand in 2009 with a singular focus – to simplify daily beauty rituals with multifunctional products. Now, Sans [ceuticals] has unveiled a groundbreaking new line: Perpetual, the world’s first fully waterless, 100 per cent recyclable, sustainable haircare range.

“The sentiment of use-and-dispose is so deeply embedded in our psyche when it comes to beauty and skincare products.”

Perpetual was inspired by the book War Paint, which chronicles the work of beauty icons Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubenstein. Vincent was struck by how little had changed in the industry since the 1950s. “The sentiment of use-and-dispose is so deeply embedded in our psyche when it comes to beauty and skincare products,” she explains. “I wanted to make a fundamental shift and create something to be treasured, that contained everything I was looking for, with sustainability at the forefront.”

Vincent spent almost seven years designing and developing Perpetual, testing several iterations on herself. “Creating something completely from scratch always has its challenges,” she explains. “The more complexity you bring, the more cost you bring, so whichever way you turn, there’s another variable to consider. Every time you shift the dial on functionality, something else gets dialled down. You’re constantly tweaking these dials, and every time you move one, another one moves.”

“Using water as a filler to bulk out products results in millions of tonnes of senseless CO2 emissions.”

Perpetual features a range of high-performance components including FiberHance BM, a patented, glucose-derived technology which strengthens hair from within by supporting its keratin structure. The waterless cleansers and conditioners come in two kits: the Perpetual Hair Cleanser + Conditioner Light Kit Duo (for normal to oily hair) and the Perpetual Hair Cleanser + Conditioner Rich+ Kit Duo (for dry, frizz-prone or colour-treated hair), both designed for all genders. Refill subscriptions are also available, making the process effortless and truly perpetual.

Most shampoos and conditioners on the market contain between 70 and 95 per cent water – a fact that was another key driver in the formulation of the range. “Using water as a filler to bulk out products results in millions of tonnes of senseless CO2 emissions,” explains Vincent. “Perpetual is created without water, designed to activate in-shower for potency  – with a much better environmental impact.”

“I find the bathroom a very noisy space, often with different products, designs and materials competing. It was important to create a sense of calm.”

For Vincent, the look of the canisters was just as important as their sustainability credentials. “I find the bathroom a very noisy space, often with different products, designs and materials competing. It was important to create a sense of calm. Having no labels or print was essential because I wanted to bring a timeless quality to the products.”

After 107 prototypes, the team perfected a minimal design for the canister that embodies luxury and elegance, with a spark-eroded finish that mimics ceramic. Lightweight and travel-friendly, each canister is durable enough to withstand wet, humid bathroom environments. The dispensers are crafted from recycled plastic sourced from old bottles, while the refill kits are made from discarded sugarcane leaves. The closed-loop process means every canister can be reground into another, while the refill packs can be composted, completing the cycle.

Vincent’s vision was to develop something completely new within the beauty space, and she’s succeeded.

To reduce the environmental footprint, maintain creative control and stay close to producers, Vincent based the entire manufacturing process in New Zealand – essential during Covid when travel wasn’t possible. From both commercial and environmental perspectives to lead-time reduction, everything aligned perfectly.

Vincent’s vision was to develop something completely new within the beauty space, and she’s succeeded. She hints at another industry first launching in February 2026, as Sans [ceuticals] continues to push boundaries with products that blend eco-consciousness, functionality and beautiful design.
