SAOIR embodies the return of an existing heritage home to its former handmade self, with added elements that elevate the everyday and celebrate traditional craftsmanship. REFRESH* draws inspiration from the existing early timber homes of the area, allowing the contemporary iteration of the home to be a fusion of both past and present.

Located in Fortitude Valley, SAOIR is a reinvigorated timber home that has seen many previous iterations, seeing the current design take inspiration from the original 1900s form – the previous glory of the residence. Named SAOIR¬ – the Scottish Gaelic word for carpenter – REFRESH* honours two of the structure’s original carpenters whilst adding respectful and sympathetic contemporary elements.

Combined with contemporary and muted elements, texturally rich timber finishes are integrating throughout the home, adding warmth, connections to nature and a homely atmosphere.

At the time of the home’s inception, timber was the primary building material. The lightness and availability of timber made it the ideal selection for construction and comfort within the specific climate conditions. The inclusion of the material in the new iteration of SAOIR acts as a unique binding point to the culture and surrounding environment. Though rich in history, the home’s façade is near identical to its initial construction – only the addition of timber screening to shroud the lower level indicates a contemporary twist. The screening allows for the creation of a series of private outdoor spaces whilst letting dappled sunlight illuminate the home and add animation to previously stagnant areas. The balance created between the warmer timber elements and lighter contemporary finishes accentuates the dynamic contrast of the interior materials, blending the old and the new to create a visually interesting experience.
