Intimately connected to the outdoors, PALMY is inspired by the nearby sea and sun. Arclab and Deborah Bibby transform a 1970s-era home into one that feels calm and embracing – qualities that are enhanced by the elevated position.

PALMY comes together through a balanced approach, deftly configuring private and open plan areas. The integration of storage into the structure allows the inserted furniture, joinery, lighting and artwork to feel sculptural and flexible. Forming a solid foundation that responds to context and expresses a narrative of the area was key for both Arclab and Deborah Bibby. The materials used echo the coastal setting and the subtleties in texture add depth to each of the spaces.

Honouring the home’s midcentury origins, a final reworking of the spaces ensures an enhanced flow of movement. The openness of the planning and the permeable nature of the structure ensures a clear connection to the surrounding environment. Defined by creamy, neutral tones reminiscent of sand, the home’s palette is subtle and warm. Heightening this is brass detailing and the use of various textures.

Although the home is a tranquil retreat, it is adept for entertaining a large number of guests. The dedicated outdoor spaces layer moments of openness and reprieve, further enhancing the versatile nature of the residence. In the dwelling’s transformation, the kitchen was moved to a central location, reflecting a modern way of living.

Arclab and Deborah Bibby reinvigorate PALMY for a new chapter. Through composure and warmth, the newly defined home sits well placed for the coming years.
