Visualised as a physical shadow that sits behind the heritage frontage of its predecessor, Shadow House is darkly recessive in approach yet richly layered from within. Grotto Studio enhances the history of the original form, weaving in moments of the unexpected among a careful arrangement of open, connected and intimate retreat spaces.

As a harmonious interplay between old and new, Shadow House looks to the existing elements on site for inspiration. Located in Bayswater, Perth, the newly expanded residence carefully integrates nature, sunlight and the grounding of its parts across the site. Though the site was originally occupied by the heritage cottage, the owners wanted to optimise its potential, creating more opportunities for connection. Nestled within a historic streetscape, the structure artfully reinterprets a prominent cultural symbol and celebrates the cherished 1900 cottage. Grotto Studio ensures an environmental and textural influence guides the integration of the old and new.

Committed to being environmentally conscious whilst prolonging the legacy of the existing home, the design incorporates reclaimed materials for sustainability purposes. The additional form to the rear sees a generous living area with glazing that allows morning sunlight to filter in and offers clear views of the established jacaranda trees outside. Throughout the day, the strategic placement of the glazing ensures the living area remains naturally warm and energised. Whilst the original outer limits of the cottage are expanded, an additional studio is also integrated with its own private courtyard. A suitable space for retreat or guest accommodation, the studio adds invaluable amenity.

Crossing an airy and open atrium space, the new and old forms exist as their own entities. As part of that journey, a raw jarrah-lined courtyard pauses the planning and offers a space for stillness and reflection. The seamless integration of the original and new structures, as well as their shared textures, creates many atmospheric spaces, encouraged further by raw materials and dynamic lighting throughout the day. Meticulously crafted to foster smooth and uninhibited daily living, these spaces transform everyday rituals within the home into experiences that are more memorable and elevated.

Honouring its history and place, Shadow House is thoughtful in design, offering a living experience that embraces both natural and built elements. Through listening to the site, Grotto Studio enhances the features of the heritage structure without imposing on the existing and creates more opportunities for connection.
