Enriching Workspaces – SJB Sydney Studio by SJB
While needing to support the myriad requirements of a practice encompassing architecture, interior design, planning and urban design, the SJB Sydney Studio emphasises the multi-functional over the prescriptive.
Drawing on rich colour and material palettes to create an authentic and friendly workspace, the studio gives pride of place to a generous kitchen and library. Large external decks offer plenty of outdoor space, and a collegial atmosphere is fostered through desk and workspaces that enable collaboration.
The interplay of unexpected hues, ranging from deep burgundy to blue and pink, along with natural materials such as spotted gum and travertine, brings depth to the studio. With the expansive sense of space only heightened by the floor-to-ceiling windows with views over the treetops to the Surry Hills locale, these colours and textures have a grounding effect. The pervasive use of colour brings a cosseted sense of immersion to smaller spaces, like the stairwell and cloakroom, while enlivening the larger, more open areas. Meanwhile, the texture of unfilled travertine and spotted gum bring a warmth to the interior, which is even further enhanced by the layering of furniture, art and objects.
All of this could speak to a more residential approach to workplace design, but the studio treads the line by feeling welcoming, friendly and authentic without appearing entirely domestic. The kitchen and adjoining library, for example, are designed with the flexibility to host events and meetings, as well as providing essential day-to-day amenity. This flexibility is not only a matter of scale; something about the tactile yet refined materiality and the saturated yet restrained colour palette ensures the spaces lend comfortably to both social and professional interaction.
Designed to facilitate and inspire the practice of design, the SJB Sydney Studio draws on rich colour and material palettes to create an engaging contemporary workspace.
