The challenge of maximising indoor-outdoor space on a small site sees Small/Big House embrace the delicate balance between beauty and functionality. Rowe Studio uses a sense of restraint and generosity in extending the heritage home to optimise both past and present features and continue a charmed legacy.

Located in Caulfield in Melbourne’s inner north, Small/Big House takes its musings from contemporary residential living, with the architect weaving this style into the existing limitations of the heritage site. Through a focus on craft and the layers of existing character retained in the Californian-inspired bungalow, the expansion is concealed behind the existing silhouette yet completely transforms the liveability of the residence from within. By overlaying an element of flexibility into the planning, particularly in the open living space on the ground floor, Rowe Studio ensures the residence can respond to the needs of both current and future occupants.

Reviving its detail-rich origins, the home blends both old and new elements. In the architect’s effort to restore and expand, the original façade remains in place as a respectful nod to its past, whilst existing and new rooms within serve as spaces of retreat. The ground floor opens to a connected living, dining and kitchen area, which then flows out into the landscape beyond. Above, three additional bedrooms and bathrooms are tucked away, ensuring the entirety of the site has been thoughtfully utilised. Whilst restrictive, the existing size of the site provided parameters within which the ambitions of the owners could be realised, resulting in an expanded dwelling.

A gentle palette binds the old and new, with dark timber flooring connecting the two eras of the home. Further warmth is then brought in through the integration of light timber joinery as well as furniture, artwork and lighting of a similar colour. The interior narrative is one of textures that bridge contemporary styles with traditional gestures. Bagged brick forms a backdrop for soft tones, and the occasional use of bold colour adds a sense of animation. Each piece within also improves the expression of personality, adding to the spaces without drawing attention away. Maintaining views out into the natural surrounds softens the edges of the site and enhances a feeling of retreat and disconnection once inside.

Small/Big House is a canvas for everyday life, where practicality and tradition intertwine, providing a sanctuary for its owners. By working within the limits of the existing heritage home and providing a sense of openness from within, Rowe Studio embraces the balance between historic charm and practical living.
