South Yarra Residence is recalibrated to facilitate the expansion of family while retaining connections to the past. Melanie Beynon Architecture blends a modern sensibility with historic reminders in the Edwardian home, shifting to an openness that connects to the surrounding landscape.

“The shift to an open-plan layout reflects our social lifestyle of hosting coffee gatherings, playdates and dinner parties,” says homeowner Alice Rudd of South Yarra Residence. Focusing on expanding opportunities for connection, the team drew from the generosity of scale already in place. The home was realigned to enhance views and aid in the flow of movement between inside and out. The integration of full-height steel and glass windows to the living space reinforces it as a place to gather and encourages a wealth of natural light.

Grounding each of the spaces within landscaping and increasing the number of openings allowed the natural elements to feel like an extension of the interior. “The windows allow the courtyard to feel like part of the house,” says Alice, “and the curved walls leading into the kitchen also cement the galley space as being an important part of how the home functions.” Throughout, storage and amenity have been integrated into the architecture to both conceal contents and ensure the ornate detailing of the original home stands out against the newer insertions. By balancing function and elevated refinement, the home feels like a retreat, yet it is supportive for the daily needs of family life.

A muted approach drove the selection of finishes and ensures a consistency across each of the rooms and levels, binding old and new together. Along with subtleties in texture that add a depth to the otherwise monotone palette, there is a clear warmth created and accentuated through each finish. “Our choice of Articolo lighting creates the warmth and gentleness we desired,” Alice notes, highlighting the significance of lighting in shaping the ambience of the space. Carefully selected lighting fixtures from Articolo illuminate the interiors with a soft, inviting glow. “The sconces in the bathrooms are particularly delightful,” she adds.

In a redefining of its narrative, South Yarra Residence sees Melanie Beynon Architecture transform the storied home into a dynamic and flexible haven to suit the ebb and flow of life. As a testament to the power of retaining history and using restraint instead of imposition, the resulting abode is destined to remain relevant for many years.
