Drop 001 Collection
Zenn Design partners with Studio Tali Roth on Drop 001, a ready-made collection extending the Melbourne brand’s craftsmanship into a considered, globally available line.
Zenn Design has built its reputation as one of Melbourne’s leading bespoke furniture brands, working to a made-to-order model with pieces produced individually for each client and the lead times that come with commissioned work. Ready-Made responds to a demand the studio had been tracking for some time – customers wanting considered, well-made pieces without that wait. The category introduces a different proposition: a permanent new line built around a series of furniture drops, each developed with a leading Australian designer and offered in stock rather than on commission.
Studio Tali Roth for Zenn Design marks the category’s debut as Drop 001, the first release intended to reach customers without the wait that a commissioned piece demands. “This collection represents an exciting new chapter for Zenn,” says founder Hannah Goldberg. “It allows us to bring beautifully designed furniture to a broader audience while remaining committed to the craftsmanship, quality and thoughtful design principles that have always guided the brand.” Ready-Made is framed as an extension of those principles into a different production model, one built to operate at a faster pace and tested first through this partnership.
The design direction came from Roth, who drew on contemporary French interiors without settling into direct reference. The range – which is available to view and shop online – centres on bedside tables built around faceted hexagonal silhouettes, mitred joinery and brushed stainless steel, and envisioned as being compact enough for smaller rooms. The same hexagonal language runs through an upholstered ottoman and bench on solid timber bases, the pieces sitting deliberately outside any single period or geography. “The intention was to create pieces you couldn’t quite place – are they old, are they new, are they local or international?” Roth explains. “That ambiguity is what allows them to slip into a wide range of interiors and feel like they’ve always been there.”
Ready-Made is designed to travel further, carrying the brand’s approach to material integrity into a globally available range.
Production for Drop 001 splits the work across two locations. Solid timber components are precision-made offshore before metalwork, upholstery and final finishing are completed at Zenn’s Melbourne workshop, a structure that allows the brand to hold its standards steady while working at greater scale and at a more accessible price point than its commissioned furniture. Longevity shaped decisions at a component level, too, with premium internal hardware specified throughout and plastic fittings excluded in favour of more durable, longer-wearing alternatives, a detail consistent with how the brand approaches its bespoke work. Roth describes the collaboration as a natural fit between two working methods. “Zenn’s craftsmanship and our studio’s design sensibility work in step,” she says.
Where Zenn Design’s custom furniture remains tied to individual clients, Ready-Made is designed to travel further, carrying the brand’s approach to material integrity into a globally available range. Each future drop will pair the brand with a different leading Australian designer, positioning the Studio Tali Roth collaboration as the opening chapter in an ongoing partnership model that will continue to unfold with each new release.
