Walking along City Reach Boardwalk, with a slight turn up the stairs, lies one of Brisbane’s newest restaurants, Supernormal, a considered continuation of the calm riverside locale. The fourth collaboration between ACME and culinary moguls Andrew McConnell and Jo McGann, the design effortlessly positions the beloved Melbourne-born, Asian- influenced restaurant in Queensland’s capital.

Seating up to 150 people, Supernormal Brisbane is the culmination of ACME’s vision to balance the lively energy the Melbourne CBD original is known for with nuanced references to Brisbane’s subtropical climate and laid-back lifestyle. Upon entry, a monolithic emerald marble host station set against an oversized woven tapestry sets the tone. Deeper inside, an open kitchen sits boldly within the double-height volume, quickly drawing one’s attention to the lively action before casting the eye towards the sprawling banquette seating.

Raw materiality dominates – panelled timber and rattan detailing, as well as timber chairs and an organic carved bar, are reminiscent of Brisbane’s coastal woodlands.

Raw materiality dominates – panelled timber and rattan detailing, as well as timber chairs and an organic carved bar, are reminiscent of Brisbane’s coastal woodlands. There is a strong connection to the outdoors at every turn – olive carpet and a peppered green terrazzo floor echo the lush foliage, while floor-to-ceiling windows and mirrors along the wall reflect vistas of the water and palm trees beyond. During the day, natural light enters the space, yet bamboo pendants and parchment-tiered wall sconces cast a soft glow at night.

The private dining room is imbued with a similar warmth with natural timber shutters, heritage Petrie Bight sandstone and panoramic views that work together harmoniously. Supernormal Brisbane’s robust, natural tones create a relaxed and welcoming feel, mirroring the Melbourne original but transplanted to a sunnier climate, where it’s now perfectly at home.
