Built to Last – The Erskine Sofa by Kett

Words by Vaishnavi Nayel Talawadekar

The Erskine Sofa by Kett is inspired by the tones and textures of the Australian landscape, whose undulating topography is reimagined in its waterfall-like sweep. The Erskine is made to order in Melbourne in a range of upholstery options that hold a mirror to Australia’s warm tonal deserts and cool misty mountains.

As the focal point of the living room, the sofa often inspires fond memories. For many families, it is not just a piece of furniture but rather an investment that requires thoughtful consideration. After all, as a place where family and friends gather to share stories, food and laughter, it is one that ought to endure for years to come. This was the rationale behind the Erskine Sofa by Kett, designed to offer comfort, durability and elegance, all in equal measure. “[It was created] not only to be loved for one trend cycle, or one home, but to be cherished, passed down and cared for by generations to come,” says Justin Hutchinson, Design Director of Kett, who took over two years to hone and refine the design.

The Erskine collection also comprises a bed, an armchair and coffee table. The entire collection takes inspiration from the Australian landscape, expressed in both the undulating forms and textural, tonal upholstery. The Erskine Sofa has several hallmarks, including a curvilinear form, modular layout options and generous cushioning. The sofa features a kiln dried hardwood frame with webbed system and solid oak base. The back and seat cushions are similarly crafted for comfort. The former feature a feather down composition, and the latter contain a premium foam inner core and luxury feather down tops. Additionally, the sofa offers modular flexibility, with two- and three-seater versions reconfigurable into multiple layouts.

Kett takes pride in its purposefully slow production process, one that is triggered only on the arrival of an order. Including material procurement, timber framing and staining, upholstering, cleaning and quality control, each sofa takes 8-10 weeks to reach completion. “In a world filled with food, fashion and entertainment, all just a click away, our 8-10 week lead time can feel like a long time. We choose to opt out of the fast furniture cycle and instead return to traditional craftsmanship with quality that can be trusted,” notes Justin. Made to order in Melbourne, the sofa is made in collaboration with local craftspeople, who hand-make each piece to ensure optimum quality.
