The Jenga Loft by JFORM
Blending contemporary design with natural elements, The Jenga Loft in Surry Hills is a beautiful interplay of contrasts.
A reflection of Jonathan Friend of JFORM’s recent travels to Spain, the loft balances modern details and creative energy. “The vibrant culture and rich architectural heritage inspired me,” reflects Friend on his time in Spain. “The Jenga Loft represents a fusion of my experiences, passions and vision – a space where artistry and functionality converge to create a living experience that is both grounding and inspired by the beauty of my travels.”
Despite being a fairly small apartment, the interior feels fluid and expansive, grounded in an open layout and a sense of movement between spaces. Central to the loft’s design is a striking Jenga-inspired spiral staircase. “Its angular, stacked structure mimics the playful yet precise nature of the Jenga game, adding a sense of dynamic movement and intrigue to the space,” notes Friend.
Materials are dominated by raw concrete, polished metal and glass, complemented by wooden accents. Walnut, cedar and American oak are woven throughout the apartment, imbuing an earthy feel that injects warmth and depth into the otherwise industrial setting. “Walnut, with its rich, dark tones, offers a sense of timeless elegance, while the lighter, aromatic cedar adds a touch of warmth and freshness,” says Friend. Spanish influences including vibrant tile patterns, textured wall treatments and handcrafted details, also feature throughout.

Existing loft features are carefully maintained to enhance the creative feel of the space. For example, large windows are restored to welcome ample natural light, making the apartment feel even more open while connecting the interior with the surrounding cityscape. Similarly, most pieces of furniture are abstract and sculptural – harking back to the artistic energy a traditional loft is known for – like the kitchen island bench with a base that resembles a barrel and the unsymmetrical wooden chair in the study nook.
JFORM’s considered harmony of sculptural details, raw materials and fluid layout creates a unique environment that feels simultaneously luxurious and inviting.
