The Great Outdoors – The King Outdoor Furniture Collection
Established in 1977 as a family-owned, family-run company, King has since succeeded to the vanguard of Australian furniture design, with a portfolio of contemporary, award-winning furniture that is built to last. Its latest outdoor collection draws on a five-decade tradition of high-quality craftsmanship to reimagine al fresco living.
From balconies to backyards, courtyards to country houses, indoor-outdoor spaces are integral to the Australian way of life. The King luxury outdoor collection – which includes sofas, tables, chairs, sun lounges, ottomans and accessories – is inspired by this love of living outdoors, offering carefully engineered furniture designed to withstand Australia’s harsh weather conditions whilst affording maximum comfort.
The company’s long-held tradition of innovative sofa design is echoed in its outdoor collection, which is characterised by high-quality materials, modular parts, water- and mould-resistant fabrics and advanced weather protection. Of particular note is the use of water-resistant technology. Unlike most other outdoor furniture, the collection incorporates an additional water-resistant layer (similar to leading mountaineering apparel), as well as sealed seams that succeed in resisting moisture.
In addition to outdoor sofas, the collection also constitutes quick-drying, breathable and UV-stable furniture and accessories that together form a cohesive outdoor solution. In keeping with the company’s commitment to longevity, King offers refurbishment services, including replacement of covers and restoration of individual components. Function is followed closely by form, with the collection also encompassing a wide range of patterned and plain fabrics that suit a variety of styles.
Although a step forward in innovation, the outdoor collection echoes how King has supports time-honoured tenets of sustainability, as evidenced in its use of recyclable materials. “Everything we have learned about indoor furniture design over the past five decades has been translated to our outdoor designs,” says Rechberger, Senior Designer at King. “If you placed an indoor sofa outside, the weather would act to deteriorate it very quickly. We put in a lot of work to make our outdoor products last. One of the key aims was to retain the comfort features of our indoor sofas and create the most comfortable outdoor furniture in the market.”
