In the Los Feliz hills, Klein has skilfully updated a modest two-bedroom ranch into a spacious, modern four-bedroom home that integrates beautifully with its natural surroundings.

The transformation of The Lowry Project began with crucial upgrades to support an expansion that more than doubled the original living space. Initially, the home was aligned with the street, which left a large portion of the site underutilised in terms of landscaping. By extending the building on both west and east sides, the redesign effectively utilised this space.

The transformation of The Lowry Project began with crucial upgrades to support an expansion that more than doubled the original living space.

This expansion enabled the creation of an inward-facing courtyard that not only enhances privacy but also frames a new deck and pool area with stunning views to the south-east of the San Gabriel Mountains. The courtyard has become a central feature of the home’s layout, seamlessly connecting the indoors and outdoors and significantly amplifying the sense of space.

The reimagined residence is cleverly arranged, with bedrooms strategically placed around a central living and cooking area. This main section is split-level, with a few steps leading down from the living room to the kitchen, enhancing the separation while maintaining an open feel. The split-level design is also echoed outside, where the rear deck mirrors the interior levels. The pool is situated on the upper level, with additional seating and bedroom terraces on the lower level, creating a connection between the home’s interior and exterior settings.

Material consistency is a hallmark of the project. Douglas fir wood is used extensively, from the window frames to the kitchen and bathroom vanities.

The window design also plays a critical role in the renovation. Custom, solid timber windows have been installed throughout the home, featuring large, frameless views that enhance the connection to the outdoors. These windows are designed without traditional moulding, employing deep threshold frames that contribute to the dwelling’s clean, minimal aesthetic and foster a calming atmosphere.

Material consistency is a hallmark of the project. Douglas fir wood is used extensively, from the window frames to the kitchen and bathroom vanities. The vanities are crafted from locally sourced Breccia and Ceppo natural stones, beautifully set against the minimal vertical grain of the Douglas fir. This uniform approach to materials strengthens the visual flow throughout the home and showcases the understated beauty of the natural elements used.

The use of high-quality materials and thoughtful design ensures that each room is both beautiful and practical.

The thoughtful layout extends to the functional aspects of the abode as well. The kitchen and bathrooms feature bespoke fixtures and fittings, with custom cabinetry designed to maximise space and complement the home’s modern sensibility. The Lowry Project is a refined embodiment of contemporary living, offering ample space for everyday living, with cosy bedrooms strategically placed for privacy. This transformation by Klein has revitalised an old structure and enhanced the home’s interaction with its stunning setting.
