An Artistic Rendition of Contemporary Rugs – The Luz Rug Collection by Pampa

Words by Peter Bain

Pampa is a Byron Bay-based homewares brand that collaborates directly with skilled artisans in remote and rural areas of Argentina to produce high-quality, handwoven textiles. Its latest rug collection, Luz, draws inspiration from the work of two visionary artists, Mark Rothko and Luis Barragán. A stunning combination of vibrant colours and clean lines, each rug is handwoven with 100 per cent sheep’s wool, making them both durable and soft to the touch.

The individuality of Pampa’s Luz rug collection lies in the inspiration behind its design. The idea for the collection first lived inside the mind of Pampa Co-Founder Victoria Aguirre when she was studying photography in New York in her early 20s. Her love of abstract artist Mark Rothko and the work of architect Luis Barragán, which she experienced when travelling through Mexico, was her inspiration. “The way [Mark Rothko] defines open space through the expressionism of light via colour helped inform my own work as a photographer and, years later, is the inspiration behind this contemporary rug collection,” Victoria says. “Rooted in this collection is also the work of Luis Barragán in Mexico and his influence on contemporary architecture, [which breaks] some of the unspoken rules of modernism through his use of colour, light and shadow.”

Using a simplified form and broad washes of colour, the Luz rug collection is handwoven with 100 per cent sheep’s wool, making it an ideal material for adding balance and depth to any living space. Crafted with the intention of evoking the same depth of emotion found in the work of both Mark Rothko and Luis Barragán, this collection focuses on combining block colours and earthy tones. The rugs are woven using traditional methods typical of Latin American rugs, where the looms used are generally the width of the arm span of the weaver. Depending on the width of the weaver’s loom, the rug may have one or more discreet unions where the panels of the rug are joined, which highlights a beautiful handmade element.

In many parts of Argentina, the use of natural dyes, patterns inspired by nature and the traditions of manual weaving are slowly fading away. Pampa sets out to rediscover threatened cultures and revive lost traditions, and do so by supporting skilled artisans in remote Argentina and beyond to produce homewares and accessories that are woven works of art.
