Melbourne-based designer Zachary Frankel’s new Ripple Mirror is the latest addition to his repertoire of patterned and geometric pieces.
The Ripple Mirror was born out of the remains of Zachary’s experimental design process for the backrest of his X Chair. No stranger to the art of repurposing – as evidenced by his Arc Series, a collection crafted from post-industrial waste plastics – Zachary saw an opportunity in the abandoned backrest to create a piece with a gravity of its own.
The capsule collection of mirrors comes in five colours and three sizes, each size one or two concentric rings larger than the last. The mirror’s undulating form enlivens other patterns present in a space, guiding the eye to appreciate the repeated folds of a curtain or the stripes on an otherwise-nondescript bath towel. Although the high-gloss paint of the Ripple Mirror was inspired by automotive finishes, the decadent lacquered effect gives a nod to art deco design.
Inviting a piece like the Ripple Mirror into a room means welcoming a spark for imagination into a space. The multidisciplinary nature of Zachary’s background, which encompasses jewelry-making, furniture design and sculpting and the fluidity of his design process imbue his pieces with a sense of functional malleability. This mirror, for example, could occupy one’s imagination as a portal into another dimension.

What started out as a happy little accident is now a versatile statement piece that is as at home in a bedroom as a bathroom, entryway or otherwise. Meditative yet playful, the Ripple Mirror is a natural addition to Zachary’s body of contemporary work and an embodiment of his modus operandi of producing pieces of furniture that are joyful and long-lasting.
