Exploring an engagement with its location, Torquay Cabin 1 is comprised of a series of interlocking gestures that blur the lines between inside and out. Emma Mitchell Architects focuses on a raw and honest approach to materiality, encouraging an interplay with the surrounding natural elements.

Concealed behind its blank entry wall, the cabin is approached by traversing through the surrounding landscape. Located among acreage in Torquay, the cabin is designed as temporary accommodation for guests. The structure was designed with the potential needs of each passing visitor in mind – an element of flexibility was embedded into the plan, allowing visitors to alter the space. Engaging with the surrounding landscape in varying degrees became a key focus, understanding that each guest would have a differing preference of immersion within the environment. Emma Mitchell Architects allows for both an active and passive engagement with the surrounds through the integration of operable openings and elements.

Torquay Cabin 1 results from a long-established relationship between the involved parties. Imagined as a prototype, the space is one of three planned for future development and is founded on adaptability – exploring how the elements engage with the terrain. With views out over the nearby dam, the water adds a calming and meditative feature to the experience of the surrounds, with openings ensuring direct visual access. By embedding a feeling of discovery between the cabin’s various spaces, there is a forced interaction with the natural elements that ensures a reminder of place.

Utilising innovative construction methodologies, the cabin is formed from natural and raw materials, allowing the structure to age and change as it adapts to the environment. The use of timber softens masonry blocks and cement sheeting, whilst furniture adds another layer of texture. Views outward are curated to add to the cabin’s experience, providing continuous animation. Although slight in size, the unexpected nature of the interior spaces and how they interact with the external world embeds an atmosphere of curiosity.
