Upper Bloomfield Brownstone by J. Patryce Design
Emerging from a classic New Jersey brownstone, Upper Bloomfield Brownstone is enriched by over a century of architectural history. While retaining as much of the original home’s character as possible, J. Patryce Design adapts the interiors with a modern sensibility, creating a charming two-family residence.
Located just outside New York City, Upper Bloomfield Brownstone champions the architectural heritage of the area. The original facade has been carefully restored, while, internally, the layout of the vestibule, front living room and hallway – leading to the parlour entrance – remains true to its origins. “When our clients were ready to begin the renovation, they wanted to preserve the classic brownstone feel while organising the layout in a modern way, which suited their lifestyle and young family,” says Joan Enger, principal of J. Patryce Design.
A new three-storey extension adds space for a garden-level apartment, perfect for extended family. Above, the middle level features a living, kitchen and dining room, while the upper floor includes a series of reworked rooms for sleeping, bathing, work and leisure. “Brownstones can be challenging with light, considering they typically only have windows on two sides,” says Enger. In response, J. Patryce Design incorporates glazing into the rear extension, including an oversized glass door in the dining room that floods the kitchen and living areas with natural light.
Upper Bloomfield Brownstone reflects the clients’ love for historical homes, blending decorative elements from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s. The curated objects, with their rich tones and fine finishes, are balanced by simple forms that complement the ornate details throughout the house. J. Patryce Design not only restores and reuses original doors, hardware and mantels but also introduces attractive ceiling medallions in newly reconfigured rooms. These classic touches keep pace with the home’s evolving character. Light-coloured walls and sheer drapes brighten the overall visual outcome.

“It is the subtle but rich details which matter to us,” says Enger. “We prefer a collected feel, and we thoughtfully curate the materials to work collectively with the architecture of the home.” Across the dwelling, a cohesive palette of warm rift oak, natural limestone, marble, leather and unfilled travertine creates a quiet sense of luxury. In the kitchen, the colours of the marble splashback and island benchtop – blush, sand, teal and ochre – inspire a subtle yet striking palette that contrasts with the rest of the home. While visually soft, these hues define the kitchen as a distinct space.
Upper Bloomfield Brownstone combines the elegance of historical architecture with modern, welcoming interiors. J. Patryce Design balances the aesthetic elements to craft a sophisticated two-family home that retains the timelessness of a classic New Jersey brownstone.
