Behind its storied façade, Victoria House is reinvigorated for the present through a combination of timeless restraint and bursts of maximalist expressionism. Tali Roth Interior Design ensures the key detailing of the original home remains amid a layering of character-rich textures and forms.

It is often the case that members of a household prefer different styles and aesthetics. Within Victoria House, the challenge was finding a complementary solution to include two competing styles that expressed the owners. Through adopting a bold approach that is more enduring and less descriptive of any one era, Tali Roth Interior Design navigates the existing Victorian-era home and its original detailing to bring it into the modern context. With added natural light and air in the central areas of the home, and softened edges between inside and out, the home comes together as a reflection of its occupants.

Located in Armadale, among similar-era and equally grand heritage homes, the existing structure was transformed through fusing traditional and contemporary elements. Generally narrow, the homes of the Victorian-era were of grand proportions garnered from their many storeys. Accentuating this height by bringing in and opening up the existing fabric ensures a greater connection to the natural elements throughout the day. In a weaving of old and new, taking cues from existing materials in place and noting the quality needed to ensure a matched endurance over time, a palette of artisanal finishes was developed to respectfully evolve the home.

Every element within Victoria House has been considered. From the removal of down lights throughout and the reinstating of more decorative and softer options, the overall atmosphere is conducive to and respectful of the home’s history. As a core space within any family residence, the kitchen is a notable feature, with expressive stone and contrasting yet complementary cabinetry. Following a similar approach within the bathroom spaces, the team aimed to bridge the gap between the modern and the traditional using a variety of natural stones, which were matched with polished plaster walls to add subtle movement as light touches them.

In extending the relevancy and importance of the home, Tali Roth Interior Design endows Victoria House with warmth and richness. Sensitively merging the heritage, modern and opposing style preferences of the owners, a unique fusion takes place within.
