Crafted with a masterful balance, Wave House by Martin Friedrich Architects is a bold architectural statement.

Controlled geometries create a rhythmic composition, evoking a sense of dynamism throughout the space. Cantilevered elements extend the interior outward, while carefully carved voids give rise to natural outdoor areas across all levels. Expertly blended and polished details come together to create a dramatic effect with a touch of restraint.

Situated on a corner block in Brighton, Melbourne, the home engages with dual street frontages, establishing a captivating street presence and fulfilling the client’s desire for spaciousness.

Situated on a corner block in Brighton, Melbourne, the home engages with dual street frontages, establishing a captivating street presence and fulfilling the client’s desire for spaciousness. An imposing, cast-in-situ concrete wall greets visitors, arching and curving throughout the building to delineate spaces. This defining element frames the double-height entry, drawing guests into an interior filled with drama, volume and light. The interior unfolds with a sculptural spiral staircase, adorned with ribbon-like balustrades that gracefully ascend all four levels, from basement to roof deck. A glass-sided elevator offers a discreet vertical journey, connected to a sunken courtyard on the basement level.

Central to relaxation is the two-storey indoor pool, which is visible from almost every area of the home and adjacent to the entry. Complete with a glazed, infinity edge, the pool opens to both home and garden, linking to the surrounds and enveloped by arched, full-height glazing. A spa, sauna and steam room adjoin the pool, connected to a private courtyard, which softens outlooks and provides moments for retreat.

Subtle moments and thoughtful nuances add depth and intrigue to the interiors.

The main suite exemplifies the interior design philosophy of refined luxury and spatial fluidity, with its glazed walls seemingly floating above the gardens, perched to offer panoramic views of sculptural forms and lush greenery below. Marble-clad bathrooms and spacious wardrobes enhance this sense of luxury. Two additional first-floor bedrooms provide playful sanctuaries for children, complete with glass pool windows. A second study and library, connected across split levels by bridges, create journeys throughout the residence. These subtle moments and thoughtful nuances add depth and intrigue to the interiors.

Beyond the private quarters, the residence unfolds into expansive living areas, characterised by soaring ceilings, over six metres in height. Here, concrete walls, white columns and horizontal banding create a sense of openness, culminating in the outdoor entertaining area that is sheltered by the cantilever of the main suite. The roof deck offers panoramic views of city and sea, emphasising a connection to the landscape. The spacious basement features extra entertainment areas and a gym, illuminated by natural light and fresh air from the sunken courtyard, with lush greenery seamlessly integrated throughout. The architectural vision extends to the outdoors, enveloping the residence with a curated environment that echoes the curves of the design.

Consistent materiality maintains a strong connection throughout the residence, imbuing each space with a sense of warmth and elegance.

A cohesive material palette features in the home, incorporating natural stone in green and blue hues, greyed timber veneer and bronze accents. Consistent materiality maintains a strong connection throughout the residence, imbuing each space with a sense of warmth and elegance.
