Timeless Yet Contemporary–woodside Residence By Enoki Woodside Sa Australia Image 13

Expanding the original 1800s framework, Woodside Residence sees the renovation and extension of an existing family abode to adapt to its family amongst its established wine estate setting. Enoki combines an homage to the home’s past with a timeless contemporary relevance.

Burrowed into the lush Adelaide Hills region, east of the CBD, sits Woodside Residence in the same-named locale immersed within an established wine estate. Originally a homestead for the owners of the surrounding cultivated land, the original home was endowed with many of the standard and expected architectural features of its time. Its structured formality within its regular form created a sense of balance internally. When overlaid with a more contemporary brief, one to suit a young family of five, the planning and connectivity of the spaces needed to be reconfigured and reflect a more focused and relevant contemporary condition. The resulting home is one filled with natural light and imbued with a sense of timelessness, carefully connecting across eras. Enoki, in collaboration with architects 4D Design bring an in-depth understanding of the region and a celebration of the home’s important heritage narrative together with an enduring contemporary relevance.

Built by GE Hughes, Woodside Residence sits within and is embraced by its lush landscaped garden spaces. The connectivity between the built and the natural was integral to the old and the new feeling cohesive. As an appreciator of the green world, the owner is also a wine maker and it was key that this unique appreciative relationship was expressed. At the core is a sense of relaxed ease to the home and a welcoming comfort for both its occupants and visitors over time. The new works involve the renovation and opening up of the existing, and the intertwining of the new through the creation of an open and deliberately welcoming living space. Flow and ease of movement throughout allows for the existing and introduced elements to feel intentional and their interconnection premeditated.

With a muted palette of neutral and grey finishes, the home is warmed through the use of timber flooring and select joinery. Differentiating each space is a feeling conjured through colour and through the texture of custom joinery, furniture and artwork. Key to each is their connection to the public gathering spaces that sees the reinvigoration and addition of the mud room, scullery, dining living and kitchen space, sitting area and the library spaces – all of which act as calming sanctuaries within the whole. The more private spaces, however, see the bedrooms and dedicated children’s areas take on an even more muted and passive tone. Throughout, the feeling of welcomed ease is paramount and expressed through its materiality and forms.

Woodside Residence realigns this heritage beauty to the contemporary significance it deserves. Beautifully honing on the site’s unique assets, Enoki engages with the surrounding landscape and injects a new purpose through expansion while preserving an important part of the area’s history.
