In reimagining the interior, Woollahra Terrace overlays a sense of cohesion between a treasured collection of art, furniture and sculpture and a traditional terrace home. Briony Fitzgerald Design draws from the heritage refinement of the original home in proposing insertions and additions that act as an evolution of its origins, celebrating craft and an artisanal approach.

Located in its namesake suburb, Woollahra Terrace sees the re-sculpting of the interior of an existing heritage home. In an area known for its preservation of heritage architecture, the new additions and internal amendments are conceived from a similar vernacular – resulting in the considered inclusion of timber, brass and stone. Through a respectful honouring of location and historic value, Briony Fitzgerald Design fuses the old and new with balanced materiality.

Combining refinement and nuanced elevation, Woollahra Terrace uses materiality and personal expression to create a home of contemporary relevance. The original base of the home remains whilst a layering of new elements work to create a cohesive union between the home’s iterations. Through expressive elements such as Calacatta Viola marble and brass, the traditional kitchen and wet areas are given their own character, whereas the continued use of timber weaves in a nod to the home’s original architecture. The quality and enduring nature of the materials ensures the functionality and structure of the home remains long-wearing.

Interwoven throughout the project are personal antiques, artwork, furniture and lighting that the owners have curated over time. Each embedded with stories, these unique pieces bring their own narrative to the home – adding further depth and richness as a result. In combining the characters of the owners, their pieces and the home’s history, the project becomes a dynamic residence that is both deeply personal yet open and welcoming.

Through combining the familiar with the unexpected, Woollahra Terrace shapes a unique animation of the heritage home. Briony Fitzgerald Design adds to an established appeal and, through the merging of old and new, proposes a home of personal expression.
